US Davis Cup Champions 2007

The USA won their first Davis Cup title in 12 years at home. They took advantage of their fortune when Stepanek didn't play for the Czechs in Round 1. Nadal was missing for the QFs. Söderling, the Swedes best player missing for the semis and a disjointed Russian side in the final.

Like all good teams do, they took their chances and with an excellent Bryans doubles team. The Russians needed to win a match on Day 1, but James Blake was too good for Youzhny and Roddick took out Tursunov.

Congrats on the victory they won't defend next season.

I think the second rubber with Blake actually winning was the best match for me; the make or break for the cup. And yes the odds of USA winning next year are very small. BUT you never know;)

US was the best team this year and they did well to survive against the Czechs and Sweden on their road to victory. In retrospect given that Roddick lost a set against Minar Navratil should use Dlouhy against Andy on day 1, trying to go 2-0 up. Still, we cannot blame him since Dlouhy had to perform doubles duty, it made sense to have him fresh for a potentially deciding 5th rubber against Blake. It was very sensible to predict Berdych winning both his matches on clay, actually strictly on matchups the match against Blake was more dangerous for Tomas than the match against Andy.

As for next year, the US will be out when they meet one of Spain, Argentina or Russia. By the way, even the match against Austria is far from a sure thing if Koubek is in form but we will have time to talk about it after the AO.

Funny they beat Russia again and did it easily. It seemed it was destiny for the US team this time around and congrats to them for winning the crown.
